About Us
Tashirat is a home-style orphanage located in the beautiful mountains of Tepoztlán, Mexico. Since 2003, we have provided high-quality care in a nurturing family environment for disabled girls, boys, and adolescents.
The children at Tashirat have either been abandoned or removed from parental custody due to extreme abuse or neglect. Many spent years in government care because they were ineligible for adoption and had no biological family to support them.
At Tashirat, our focus is on providing a conscious upbringing and nurturing a sense of love, security, growth, and development. We believe every child deserves love and a sense of belonging, and that family is defined beyond biological ties. By embracing those without families, we create a larger, more inclusive community.
Sadly, many children and adults with disabilities are overlooked by society, often ending up in overcrowded institutions or on the streets. We have chosen to focus primarily on disabled children, as there are few homes that serve them in Mexico. Thanks to our holistic approach and the supportive, loving environment we provide, we have seen remarkable results over the years.
Mission
Our mission is to provide abandoned disabled children with comprehensive care, a loving home and family within the Tashirat community. We support them in building a new life, equipping them with the tools and resources they need to live happy, healthy fulfilling lives.
Vision
Our vision is to grow and evolve each year, constantly improving ourselves as individuals and as a team. We are committed to enhancing our service through experience, training, and growth.
Our ultimate dream is to create a ripple effect of healing, awareness, connection, and unconditional love. The Tashirat Orphanage is our contribution to making a lasting difference in our corner of the world.
Our History
Tashirat was founded in 1994 by Brenda Jacobson in Tepoztlán, Mexico. We started as a Spiritual Learning Center for spiritual seekers, offering guidance in the fundamental tools to strengthen and balance the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. In addition, we sought to serve the most marginalized communities by organizing and giving free classes and courses at our facilities to children and people with disabilities.
In 2003, we expanded our service work and opened the Tashirat orphanage, where we provide children with high-quality comprehensive care. From the moment they enter Tashirat, our children are provided with medical, psychological, nutritional, and dental care, but above all, we offer them a healthy and loving home life with the necessary tools to build their future. From the inception of our orphanage, we have always welcomed the most vulnerable children, many of whom, due to age, disability, or behavioral problems, had little or no chance of finding a home until they arrived in Tashirat.
We currently provide full-time care to girls, boys, teenagers, and adults who have arrived to us as young children. We have the capacity for 25 – 30 residents in total, depending on the severity of their disabilities and the care they require. All of our children can continue to live with us into adulthood, living semi-independently yet with all the necessary assistance and within the safe and supportive environment of a family.
